SUMMARY:November 2019 Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:*Please note the time for this meeting is 4:00 – 6:00 pm. \nTopic: Economic Update – More Growth Ahead in 2020 \nSpeaker: Bryce Gill\, Economic Analyst – First Trust \nFeatured Partner: Todd Barney\, Invesco \nOverview:\nWith a record-long bull market and the recent inversions in the yield curve\, worries about a coming recession have been weighing on investors’ minds. Add in escalating trade tensions which are throwing even more uncertainty into the mix\, and it’s hard to know what’s on the horizon for the US economy. \nHowever\, First Trust continues to believe the fundamentals of the economy remain sound. Yield curve inversions aren’t the reliable signal they used to be due to massive intervention by central banks since 2008. Moreover\, while trade tensions have undermined the growth-boosting incentives surrounding the Trump Administration’s Tax cuts\, on net the private sector is still coming out ahead. \nThe strength of the US consumer\, and the resiliently strong labor market\, should continue to drive economic growth despite the slowdown abroad. And while there will always be negative trends to highlight\, our favorite recession early warning signals continue to point to a healthy economy in 2020. \nFollowing the speaker presentation\, join us for “Business & Beverages”\, a cocktail social with our partners who will be sharing best practices and business solutions. Hors d’oeuvres will be served. \nLocation: Maggiano’s Little Italy \nAbout the Speaker: \nMr. Gill is a member of the economics team at First Trust Portfolios and is based in the Austin\, TX office. He is a graduate of Miami University in Ohio with a B.A. in  Economics. He is currently pursuing an MBA at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. \nCost: \nEarly Registration $40.00 members and first-time attendees. $60.00 non-members\nAt the door $60.00 for FPA members\, non-members and first-time attendees. \nRegistration: Click here

SUMMARY:October 2019 Student Forum
DESCRIPTION:Student Forum Meetings are intended for prospective and current students at UCSC-Extension in the Personal Financial Planning Program\, UCSCX PFP alumni\, and for members of the Financial Planning Association (any chapter).  These meetings are not open to the general public. \n\nTopic: Preparing for the CFP®Exam \n\nOverview:\nThe CFP® exam seems a mystery. You hear it is “hard”.  The PFP courses provide a foundation\, but most students need more preparation before attempting to pass the 6-hour exam that is taken electronically. Are you looking for more on the exam details\, how to prepare for it\, experiences with the prep classes and words of advice? \nIn this session\, we will hear from four recent test takers on their experiences.  This is an opportunity to learn from former students who were in your shoes a few scant months ago. You will hear a candid assessment of the areas where they felt unprepared\, feedback on the prep classes that they took\, strategies they used and some hints for the exam day. The panelists will introduce themselves and speak about their exam experience prior to opening the session up for a general question and answer period. Come with your questions!! \nThe room opens for networking at 11:30am. \nPanelists: Dave Crook\, Karla Rees\, CFP®\, EA\, Sridhar (Sri) Krishnan\, BS\, MBA\, James Yi. \nLocation: UCSC Extension\, Santa Clara \nRegistration: Click here to register \nPanelist Bios: \nDave Crook is an alum of the UCSCX PFP program and a CFP® certificant\, having passed the exam in late 2017.  He is currently working on accruing hours needed for the credential.  His background is somewhat unconventional\, with degrees in engineering and many years spent in the local high tech industry in a HR/recruiting role — combining the analytic and the interpersonal\, which has proved useful in his early work with clients. \nSridhar (Sri) Krishnan\, BS\, MBA is the owner of Encover Personal Finance LLC\, a Registered Investment Advisor in Fremont\, CA. Sri began his career in Financial Planning after over 20 years of management and start-up experience in the Silicon Valley. He pursued his financial planning education through College for Financial Planning and passed the CFP® Board exam and Series-65 in 2017. His firm provides fee-only financial planning to professionals in the Bay Area who want to build\, grow and secure their financial future. He is a member of XY Planning Network\, FPA and NAPFA. \nKarla Rees\, CFP®\, EA\, has worked as an Associate Advisor at Wade Financial Advisory\, Inc. for the past three years and holds a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting from San Jose State University.  Karla is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and an Enrolled Agent\, enrolled to practice and to represent taxpayers before the IRS.  Karla completed the Personal Financial Planning Certificate program at UCSC Extension in 2015. She sat for the CFP® exam and the final parts of the EA exam in 2016.  Prior to changing careers to financial planning\, Karla worked as a corporate accountant in various roles/companies/industries for 20 years. \nJames Yi passed the CFP® exam in July of 2019 after completing the Certificate of Personal Financial Planning program at UCSC Silicon Valley Extension in December of 2018. He had been a business strategy and operations professional in the high-performance computer industry. He is seeking to build a new career in the financial planning field. \n

SUMMARY:October 2019 Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Overview:\nAmericans are facing a huge retirement savings shortfall and don’t appear to demonstrate the knowledge level needed to turn their savings into sustainable retirement income as only roughly 25% of Americans near retirement age can pass a basic retirement income literacy quiz. But\, it is not just a lack of literacy holding Americans back. Behavioral biases and heuristics like narrow framing and loss aversion are also creating significant roadblocks. Learn how to incorporate best practices around behavioral finance techniques and technology to help achieve better evidence-based retirement outcomes for your clients. This presentation will show you how you can rewire the way your clients think about saving for retirement to spending in retirement. \n1.5 hours CFP CE has been granted for this session by the CFP Board. \n**Ethics for CFP® Professionals will be offered in a separate session at 2pm on October 11th.  If you would like to also register for Ethics\, it is $40 for members and $60 for non-members.  Registration for both Chapter Meeting and Ethics can be done simultaneously. \nTopic: Rewirement: Improving Retirement Income Client Outcomes By Embracing Behavioral Finance Best Practices. \nSpeaker: Jamie Hopkins\, Esq.\, LLM\, MBA\, CFP®\, RICP® \nAbout The Speaker:\nJamie Hopkins\, Esq.\, LLM\, MBA\, CFP®\, RICP®\, is the Director of Retirement Research at Carson Wealth and a Finance Professor of Practice at Creighton University’s Heider School of Business\, a former professor of Taxation at The American College\, where he helped co-create the Retirement Income Certified Professional® (RICP®) education program. SUMMARY:August 2019 Far West Round Up
DESCRIPTION:Overview:\nThe Far West Roundup is an informal retreat for financial planning practitioners and those intending to enter the financial planning profession. It is held on the campus of UC Santa Cruz.  We eat in the cafeteria and we sleep in the dorms. The campus is beautiful\, the food is good (considering it’s cafeteria food)\, and the accommodations are a long shot from the Ritz. Needless to say\, this retreat is wildly popular in spite of its downscale venue. The appeal is the informal setting where planning practitioners can exchange ideas and have fun. \nLocation: UC Santa Cruz; Save the dates. \nRegistration: http://fpafarwestroundup.org/
