Note: This session is a joint effort between the SV FPA Brown Bag Team, and the Student Forum Group.

Featuring a panel of five diverse Financial Planning Professionals on “Building a Practice: So…..How Do I Find Clients?” This joint session is targeted to newer practitioners and late stage students who are developing their own strategies for building a client base. Panelists will include experienced planners as well as most recent entries into the field. They will discuss their personal strategies for expanding their client base, as well as comment on what tactics they found to be unsuccessful. There will opportunities for questions from the audience.

SPEAKER INFORMATION:

David Beck, CFP®,  is an independent fee-only financial planner specializing in college funding, and the author of a series of e-Learning modules on college planning (www.LearnCollegePlanning.com) He is a career changer with three years of hands-on experience trying various means to attract paying clients. He only wishes he could charge for the valuable advice he will be sharing.

Laura Jacobs, CFP®, is a Financial Advisor with Waddell and Reed. She has been with Waddell and Reed since 1994 and her business is a mix of fee plus commission. Laura provides one-on-one advisory services to individuals, small business owners and human resource personnel. She works with a variety of products to meet her clients’ needs, including mutual funds, life, disability and LTC insurance, Medicare supplements as well as fixed and variable annuities. She offers educational workshops for various companies and organizations. Laura has a BA from UCSD in Qualitative Economics and Decision Sciences. She is active in the FPA and is an instructor for UCSC-extension in Silicon Valley in the Financial Planning Program.

Ellen Lau, CFP®, MBA,  is a Vice President at Wellspring Consulting, a full service wealth management firm. Ellen has been practicing financial planning since 2003.  After working 3 years as a fee-only investment advisor, Ellen went on getting her security and insurance licenses.  Ellen worked 20 years in Information Technology in her first career. Craig Uffelman, CRPC®, CFP®,  is an Advanced Advisor with Ameriprise Financial Services.  From 2000 to 2009 he was the Field Vice President for Ameriprise Financial Services.  He has over 15 years of experience in the financial services industry.  Craig is active in the Silicon Valley FPA, most currently serving on the 2010 Board as the Membership Director.  Craig also volunteers teaching financial literacy to youth through the Junior Achievement program and volunteers with InnVision, a local non-profit providing services to the homeless.

Lloyd Yamada, CFP®,  is the Founder and President of LSY Financial Group, an independent financial planning practice.  He is an instructor in the Personal Financial Planning program at University of California Santa Cruz Extension in Silicon Valley, served as the President of the FPA of Silicon Valley in 2009, Chair of the FPASV in 2010 and has been a board member for the past three years.  Recently he has been selected to be on the FPA National Chapter Leadership Resource Council beginning in 2010.  Lloyd graduated with a B.S and M.S. degree in electrical engineering and worked in this field for over 20 years.  He passed the CFP® national board examination in 1999 and received the CFP® designation in 2002.
