Residency Scholarship

The application deadline for the 2010 Residency Scholarship has passed.  We hope that you will consider applying for our 2011 Scholarship.  Information on the 2011 Scholarship should be available on this site in Q1 2011.

For the fourth year, the Silicon Valley FPA Chapter is offering a scholarship to attend the FPA Residency Program from October 24th to 29th, 2010 at Lake Arrowhead, California.  In 2009, the FPA Residency Program was cancelled due to the overall economic environment, therefore, no scholarship was awarded by the Chapter.  In previous years, we have had between three and six candidates for consideration.

The successful candidate will be chosen based on completing and exceeding the requirements listed below.  One scholarship will be offered for this year’s Residency Program and will cover tuition expenses.  The successful candidate will have to provide his/her own transportation to and from Residency and pay for any incidental expenses that may arise.

Requirements for Consideration

  • In order to attend Residency, the FPA states that you must be either a CFP® certificant with 3 or fewer years of experience or you must have completed the required coursework and are eligible to sit for the CFP® certification exam.
  • You must be a Silicon Valley Chapter member holding a member designation that is consistent with your professional status.  Student members will be considered if they are qualified to sit for the CFP® exam, or have taken the exam but have not yet achieved employment.  If employed, the applicant should be a chapter member under one of the Financial Planner Categories member status options (see  http://www.fpanet.org/Membership/Individual/) at the time of application.

Applicants are required to submit a statement including the following:

  • Name, address, FPA member number, CFP® license number, if applicable, and other contact information.
  • A history of your educational and work experience, including your financial planning career and professional goals.
  • Your volunteer activities, including, but not limited to, those with the Chapter, or with activities sponsored by the Chapter.
  • An explanation of how you hope to benefit by attending the Residency Program.
  • Any other pertinent information that you feel would be useful for the Selection Committee in reviewing your application.
  • Candidates will be interviewed by a panel of Chapter leaders and the prior scholarship winner/Residency attendee as part of the selection process.
  • At the December Chapter meeting, the scholarship winner/Residency attendee is expected to provide a 5 to 10 minute oral presentation to the Chapter members about his/her experience at Residency.
  • The successful candidate is expected to participate in the Selection Committee for the 2011 candidate.
